HAZWOPER Annual Refresher Training

HAZWOPER training is an annual refresher certification training designed for employees and management personnel involved in hazardous waste site cleanup, decontamination, or corrective action operations.

The purpose of the training is to refresh and enhance participants’ knowledge of HAZWOPER requirements, workplace hazard identification, risk control measures, and safe work practices.

The training covers site assessment, work-zone control, hazard monitoring, proper selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), decontamination procedures, safe handling of drums and waste containers, emergency response, and requirements for safe entry and rescue operations in confined spaces.

Program Components

1. HAZWOPER Requirements and the Health and Safety Program

• General HAZWOPER safety requirements;
• HAZWOPER requirements related to hazardous waste site cleanup operations;
• Structure of the Health and Safety Program;
• Key components and requirements of the Health and Safety Program;
• Employee training and medical surveillance requirements.

2. Site Assessment, Hazard Control, and Work-Zone Management

• Hazardous waste site characterization (Site Characterization);
• Use of initial and ongoing site assessments and monitoring;
• Hazard control measures;
• Workplace environmental monitoring requirements and practices;
• Site Control and work-zone organization;
• Identification and control of work zones at hazardous waste sites.

3. PPE, Decontamination, and Safe Work with Hazardous Waste

• Selection and use of protective clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
• Decontamination requirements and procedures;
• HAZWOPER decontamination procedures and best practices;
• Safe handling of drums and waste containers;
• Safe work practices in contaminated environments.

4. Emergency Situations and Confined Space Operations

• Duties and responsibilities of emergency response personnel at hazardous waste sites;
• Key principles of emergency response;
• Confined Space entry requirements;
• Confined Space rescue operation requirements;
• Application of safety measures and procedures during emergency situations.
