Managing Safety and Health Construction

“Occupational Safety and Health Management - Construction Sector” is a practical, management-focused training designed to introduce participants to the key elements of occupational safety and health management systems in the workplace.

The training covers the development of a strong safety culture, management responsibilities, contractor cooperation and safety management, workplace hazard identification and assessment, hazard control methods, and approaches for the continuous improvement of safety management systems.

Program Components

1. Safety Culture and Safety Management System

• Key characteristics of a successful safety culture - management commitment, leadership, and accountability;
• Core components of a safety management system - accountability, education and training, hazard control, analysis/assessment, and the financial benefits of safety;
• Four key components of a safety management system: Structure, Resources/Inputs, Processes, and Outputs;
• Use of benchmarks to evaluate and improve the safety management system;
• Deming’s PDSA Cycle for continuous improvement of the safety management system.

2. Management, Employer and Contractor Safety Management

• Main categories of employers on a worksite and the responsibilities of each category;
• Contractor safety management - pre-bid meetings, pre-job meetings, and regular safety meetings;
• Evaluation of safety performance indicators when selecting contractors, including DART, TCIR, and MOD indicators;
• Roles and responsibilities of project safety personnel and managers;
• Management of contractor non-compliance with safety requirements;
• Communication, coordination, and cooperation in multi-employer work environments.

3. Workplace Hazard Identification and Assessment

• Five major categories of workplace hazards;
• Workplace analysis methods: hazard identification, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), baseline assessments, and inspections;
• Systematic identification and assessment of workplace hazards.

4. Hazard Control and Continuous Improvement

• Hierarchy of Controls;
• Use of benchmarks to evaluate and improve the safety management system;
• Application of Deming’s PDSA Cycle for continuous improvement of the safety management system.
