Planning for Workplace Emergencies

Planning for Workplace Emergencies is a certificate training program designed to introduce participants to the fundamental principles of emergency preparedness and response in the workplace. The course is based on approaches aligned with OSHA requirements and covers the Emergency Action Plan (EAP), emergency evacuation requirements, and the Fire Prevention and Protection Plan (FPP).

The training is designed to provide employees with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to evacuate safely, respond appropriately to workplace emergencies, and reduce fire-related risks.

1. Emergency Action Planning

• Key elements of a written Emergency Action Plan (EAP);
• Procedures for reporting emergencies and communicating emergency information;
• Roles and responsibilities of management, the EAP administrator, supervisors, and employees;
• Key employee training and preparedness requirements.

2. Evacuation and Emergency Response

• Employee evacuation procedures;
• Roles and responsibilities of evacuation coordinators;
• Key concepts related to evacuation routes — Exit Access, Exit, and Exit Discharge;
• Basic requirements for evacuation routes, the number of exits, and final exit discharge;
• Basic response procedures for Active Shooter situations;
• Employee actions and responsibilities during emergency evacuations.

3. Fire Prevention and Protection

• Key components of a Fire Prevention and Protection Plan (FPP);
• Roles and responsibilities of designated personnel under the EAP and FPP;
• Workplace housekeeping best practices to reduce fire risks;
• Common electrical hazards that can contribute to workplace fires;
• Portable and fixed fire protection systems and fire extinguishers;
• Basic principles for the safe use of fire extinguishers.

4. Practical Emergency Preparedness and Equipment Use

• Practical emergency evacuation exercises;
• Training on the use of fire protection equipment;
• Practical emergency response procedures for employees;
• The importance of employee preparedness and periodic training under the EAP and FPP.
