Materials Handling Safety

Materials Handling Safety is a training program designed to introduce participants to the fundamental principles of safely handling, moving, loading, and unloading materials manually and with mechanical equipment. The program covers hazards associated with powered industrial trucks, cranes, slings, conveyors, and material storage, as well as practical methods for controlling these risks.

The training focuses on safe work practices that help reduce injuries, accidents, and risks associated with the improper handling and movement of materials. Participants will learn the basic requirements for safely handling, lifting, transporting, and storing materials in the workplace.

Program Components

1. Manual and Mechanical Materials Handling

• Hazards associated with manual materials handling;
• Safe practices for loading, transporting, and unloading materials;
• Hazards associated with Powered Industrial Trucks, including forklifts;
• Safe operation of forklifts and other mechanized transportation equipment.

2. Cranes and Lifting Operations

• Hazards associated with cranes and safe work practices;
• Safe use of slings;
• Safety requirements for crane operators and Signal Persons;
• Training and qualification requirements for crane operators and Signal Persons;
• Safe organization of lifting and material handling operations.

3. Conveyors and Safe Material Storage

• Basic safety rules and hazard controls when working with conveyors;
• Requirements for the safe use of slings;
• Workplace housekeeping;
• Principles of safe material placement and storage.

4. Safety Management and Risk Prevention

• Identifying risks associated with material handling and movement;
• Implementing safe work practices;
• Preventing injuries and accidents during lifting and material movement;
• The importance of complying with safety requirements and employee responsibilities.
