Forklift Competent Person is a training program designed to introduce participants to the fundamental principles of safe forklift operation, hazard identification, and injury prevention. The program focuses not only on safe forklift operation, but also on properly organizing forklift operation, maintenance, and operator training processes.

The training provides participants with practical knowledge for assessing forklift-related risks, planning appropriate control measures, and organizing operator training. Completion of the course represents an important first stage in the process of obtaining Forklift Competent Person status/certification.


Program Components

1. Safe Forklift Operation

  • Basic forklift classifications and their applications;
  • Fundamental forklift safety components;
  • Principles of safe forklift operation and travel;
  • Best practices for safe forklift operation;
  • Safe work practices during forklift maintenance.

2. Hazard Identification and Risk Control

  • Identification of major hazards associated with forklift operation;
  • Measures for preventing forklift-related incidents and injuries;
  • Hierarchy of Controls and its application to reducing forklift-related risks;
  • Use of engineering, administrative, and other control measures.

3. Operator Training and On-the-Job Training

  • Forklift operator training and education requirements;
  • On-the-Job Training (OJT) and its stages;
  • Basic principles for evaluating operator knowledge and skills;
  • Organization and supervision of practical training.

4. Role and Responsibilities of the Competent Person

  • Oversight of safe forklift operations;
  • Monitoring equipment condition and compliance with safety requirements;
  • Organization of practical training for forklift operators;
  • Documentation and evaluation of training results;
  • Planning measures to improve safety and reduce risks.
